Guess Who? Adult Small Group Activity

October 01, 2018

The Adult Ministries Team is excited to announce that “Guess Who?” (Aldersgate’s adult, small group fellowship activity) is beginning again in October.  That means ALL New Groups and ALL new opportunities to make friends and strengthen bonds with people in our congregation!  Once a month, a couple or member of a group will have an opportunity to host a dinner at their home or another venue.  The host of the group will begin the dinner by engaging in a faith-centered activity. This could mean a devotional reading, a biblically themed game or any creative way you would like to begin the evening by focusing on Christ!  From there, the group will have fun socializing over dinner, getting to know each other better, and of course, laughing together!  The number in your group will determine how many months you meet.  From there, the group may very well take on a life of its own!  To become part of a group, sign up at the bulletin board in the hallway near the pastor’s office anytime from September 2nd — 30th.

We will need volunteer group facilitators.  These leaders are simply asked to kick off the first dinner (set the tone) and take on the responsibility of making sure the group is communicating.  If you would like to be a group facilitator, please send an email to
Brooke Wagster at bwagster89@gmail.com by September 15.

Ladies of the Church Painting Party

October 06, 2018

On Saturday, October 6, all ladies of Aldersgate are invited to come to a painting party in the Fellowship Hall. Melinda Reid, Executive Director of the Jackson Arts Council, will direct us in painting a lovely motif from our Rose Window.   Melinda has been hosting mobile paint parties for seven years, and can help even those who have never attempted this craft to achieve success.  The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. with snacks, a devotion, and singing.  Then from 10:30 until approximately 12:00, we will receive instruction from Melinda.

The church will provide the paint and canvases, so Melinda has discounted her fee to $15 a person.  This is half the normal fee. We hope to have a minimum of ten ladies attend.  You may pay that day, but prior sign-up is definitely necessary.   Sign up by emailing Becky Buckley at buckleybecky94@gmail.com or on the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board.  Childcare will be available.

RIFA Soup Kitchen

October 25, 2018

Serving RIFA

Almost a year ago now, our Missions Team was considering if and how we could use our kitchen facilities to serve the hungry in our community.  The team invited coordinators from the RIFA Soup Kitchen to meet with them and offer their input. Following that meeting, our team members began working alongside another church, volunteering one Thursday night a month to serve dinner to the patrons at the soup kitchen.  In just a few months, Aldersgate was asked to consider being the host group on the 4th Thursday evening of month as the previous church had to step aside.  Our Missions Team was ready and brought the request to the church council.  The council approved, and our work began. Money remaining in the budget from the discontinued food pantry was designated as money to be used for this new outreach ministry.  The Missions Team accepted this request from RIFA, believing our church is called to feed the hungry and that the details of finances and volunteers would work out if we accepted the call.

So here we are – six months into this new ministry.  Many of our congregation have joined in serving. Have you participated yet?  Maybe you are still not sure what you can do or how to volunteer, so here are some ways you can help:

-Bring money to the communion rail each communion Sunday.  This offering is designated for the soup kitchen meals. It costs around $185 each month to provide the food.  If each of us gave just a couple of dollars each month, we could fund this ministry.

-Give an extra offering designated specifically for this ministry.  Just mark your envelope for the soup kitchen.

-Help prepare food at the church to be delivered to the soup kitchen.  (4:00 – 5:00 on 4th Thursday)  Sign up list is on the bulletin board.

-Serve the prepared meals to those who come to the soup kitchen.  (5:00 – 7:00 on 4th Thursday at RIFA soup kitchen on Airways Blvd.)  Sign up list is on the bulletin board.

-Make or provide cookies or brownies for desserts for the meal.  This would save on the cost of the meal. (240 cookies needed each month on 4th Thursday)

-Offer a short devotion before the meal at the soup kitchen on the 4th Thursday evening.

-Above all, pray for those who receive the meals and for our congregation as we serve them.

-NOTE:  Jan Matthews, chair of the Missions Team, can answer other questions you have or give you more information.

It’s always amazing to me how God can use us if we only listen for his call.  Thanks to the leadership of our Missions Team and their discernment, Aldersgate has an opportunity to serve the hungry in our community.  Let us continue to answer that call faithfully.

-Marianne Archer, Lay Leader

On Thursday, October 25, we need some volunteers to help prepare food and transport it to RIFA by 5:15 p.m. and also some volunteers to help serve and clean up from 5:00 — 7:00 p.m.  If you can help out, please sign up at the bulletin board in the hallway near the pastor’s office.
