Pressing On: Finding Purpose in Your Christian Journey

In life’s journey as Christians, we often hit points where we feel tired, frustrated, and tempted to quit. However, Paul’s message to the Philippians reminds us that no matter what challenges we face, we must press on toward our goal in Christ.

What Does It Mean to “Press On” in Faith?

Paul explains that everything he once valued and achieved – his status, righteousness under the law, and position as a Hebrew leader – he now considers worthless compared to knowing Christ. True transformation comes when we surrender ourselves fully to God and press on toward His purpose for our lives.

How Do We Deal With Our Past?

Many Christians struggle with their past sins and mistakes, but Paul teaches us to:

Consider our past as “rubbish” compared to our relationship with Christ
Stop letting past failures anchor us down
Trust that God has already forgiven us
Focus on moving forward rather than looking back

What Happens When We Transform Through Christ?

When we truly surrender to Christ:

Our priorities and values change completely
We may lose some worldly relationships and comforts
We gain an eternal perspective
We receive a new purpose and calling
We become ministers of the gospel in our daily lives

Why Should We Keep Pressing Forward?

Even though none of us have reached perfection:

God has purchased us for a specific purpose
We are called to make disciples and share what God has taught us
Our relationship with Christ is worth more than any worldly comfort
God deals with our future, not our past
We have Christ’s power, righteousness and love to operate from

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to:

Identify what might be anchoring you to your past
Trust God’s forgiveness and let go of past failures
Take specific steps toward the purpose God has for you
Share your faith journey with others

Ask yourself:

What am I holding onto that I need to consider “rubbish” compared to knowing Christ?
How am I actively pressing toward God’s calling for my life?
What specific steps can I take this week to move forward in faith?
Who can I share God’s transforming power with?

Remember: You don’t need a theology degree to share what God has done in your life. Simply press on toward the goal and live into your upward calling through Jesus Christ.
